We all know that one of the best parts of Halloween from a child’s perspective is the candy.   • Create a Candy Plan – Sit down with your children and have a candy plan in place. Whether that means each child picks out two pieces of candy for the night or five, if they already know the expectations, you can avoid any fights after the trick-or-treating fun and still enjoy the festivities.
  • Know What Candies are the Worst for Teeth – Some candies are worse for your child’s teeth than others. Sugary snacks, chewy and sticky candies as well as sour candies can promote bacteria growth and even wear down the enamel on your child’s teeth. If your child is going to eat candy, have them stick to sugar-free varieties or dark chocolate.
  • Eat Treats with a Meal – Make treats just that: treats. For example, everyone can have a treat after dinner as their reward for eating a healthy dinner. That way you are not only instilling good eating habits, but also limiting how much sugar your children eat that night.
  • Remember to Brush, Floss and Rinse – Sticky candy and sugar can find their way in between teeth and lead to decay. To avoid this, have your child brush and floss their teeth after each snack or at a minimum of twice a day. If you cannot get them to brush right away, have them rinse with a glass of water to wash away as many food particles as possible.
